Peyronie’s Disease Treatment in Birmingham
Peyronie’s disease is a condition in which scar tissue (plaques) forms within the penis, causing painful erections, penile curvature and, in some men, difficulty with sexual intercourse. It is more common than often recognised, affecting around 9% of men. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, provides expert assessment and management of Peyronie’s disease at private hospitals across Birmingham.
Symptoms
- A palpable lump or band of hardened tissue under the skin of the penis
- Penile curvature (upward, downward or lateral) during erection
- Painful erections, particularly in the early phase of the disease
- Shortening of the penis
- Erectile dysfunction (associated in many men)
- Difficulty or inability to have sexual intercourse due to the degree of curvature
Phases of Peyronie’s Disease
The condition typically has an acute phase (6 to 18 months) during which the plaque and curvature are still developing and may be painful, followed by a stable (chronic) phase when the plaque has stabilised. Treatment options differ according to phase.
Treatment Options
- Active monitoring: For mild curvature that does not interfere with intercourse, in the stable phase.
- Oral medication: Pentoxifylline or vitamin E have limited evidence but may be used in the acute phase.
- Intralesional injection therapy: Collagenase (Xiapex/Xiaflex), verapamil or interferon injected directly into the plaque. Collagenase is the most evidence-based option for moderate-to-severe curvature in stable disease.
- Surgical correction: For severe or refractory curvature in the stable phase, surgical plication (shortening the convex side) or plaque incision and grafting can straighten the penis effectively. Mr Shahzad can advise on the most appropriate surgical approach for each patient.
