Mr Syed Ali Shahzad provides expert diagnosis and treatment for kidney conditions including kidney stones, kidney cancer, hydronephrosis and other renal conditions. On the NHS, he holds the role of Robotic Renal Service Lead at Dudley Group of Hospitals NHS Trust, reflecting his particular expertise in kidney surgery.
Kidney Conditions
Kidney Stones
Kidney stones are hard mineral deposits that form inside the kidneys. They can cause severe pain in the back or side, blood in the urine and difficulty passing urine. Treatment depends on the size and position of the stone. Mr Shahzad offers a full range of stone treatments. Learn more about kidney stones.
Kidney Cancer
Kidney cancer often has no symptoms in its early stages and may be found incidentally on a scan. Symptoms when present can include blood in the urine, a lump in the abdomen or persistent flank pain. Mr Shahzad performs robotic and laparoscopic nephrectomy for kidney cancer, including partial nephrectomy where kidney-sparing surgery is appropriate. Learn more about kidney cancer.
Hydronephrosis
Hydronephrosis is a condition where one or both kidneys become swollen due to a build-up of urine. This is usually caused by a blockage in the urinary tract, such as a kidney stone, a narrowing of the ureter or a pelvic-ureteric junction (PUJ) obstruction. Learn more about hydronephrosis.
Other Kidney Conditions
Kidney Treatments
Laser Treatment for Kidney Stones
Flexible and rigid ureterorenoscopy (URS) with laser fragmentation allows kidney stones to be broken up and removed through the natural urinary passage without any incisions. This is a day-case procedure in most cases. Learn more about ureteroscopy and laser stone treatment.
Robotic Nephrectomy
Robotic nephrectomy uses the da Vinci robotic system to remove the kidney through small keyhole incisions. This approach allows for precise surgery with less blood loss, a shorter hospital stay and a faster recovery compared to open surgery. Learn more about robotic nephrectomy.
Robotic Partial Nephrectomy
Where a kidney tumour is suitable, Mr Shahzad aims to remove only the tumour and spare the rest of the kidney. Robotic partial nephrectomy preserves kidney function and avoids the need for full kidney removal. Learn more about partial nephrectomy.
Robotic Pyeloplasty
Robotic pyeloplasty is used to correct a pelvic-ureteric junction (PUJ) obstruction, the most common cause of hydronephrosis. The procedure reconstructs the junction between the kidney and the ureter to restore normal drainage. Learn more about robotic pyeloplasty.
Laparoscopic (Keyhole) Kidney Surgery
Mr Shahzad is experienced in both robotic and conventional laparoscopic kidney surgery. The approach used depends on the clinical situation and will be discussed with you at your consultation. Learn more about laparoscopic kidney surgery.
