Kidney Stone Prevention in Birmingham

Kidney stones have a high recurrence rate: approximately 50% of people who develop a stone will have another within 5 to 10 years without preventive measures. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, provides personalised kidney stone prevention programmes at private hospitals across Birmingham.

Why Prevention Matters

Understanding why you formed a stone is as important as treating it. Stone composition, urinary chemistry and lifestyle factors all contribute to recurrence risk. A thorough metabolic evaluation can identify specific risk factors that can be modified to significantly reduce the likelihood of further stones forming.

Dietary and Lifestyle Advice

General measures that reduce stone recurrence risk include:

  • Hydration: Drinking at least 2 to 3 litres of fluid daily to keep urine dilute. Water is the best choice. Urine should be pale yellow.
  • Dietary salt: Reducing sodium intake decreases calcium excretion in the urine.
  • Animal protein: Limiting red meat and processed meat can reduce uric acid and oxalate levels in the urine.
  • Calcium intake: Contrary to common belief, a normal dietary calcium intake is protective against calcium oxalate stones. Calcium supplements, however, may increase risk.
  • Citrus fruits: Lemon juice and other citrate-rich foods can help inhibit stone formation.

Metabolic Evaluation

For patients with recurrent stones or risk factors such as gout, hyperparathyroidism or inflammatory bowel disease, a metabolic evaluation including 24-hour urine collection allows precise identification of the underlying stone-forming tendency. This guides targeted dietary advice and, where necessary, medication.

Medical Therapy

In some cases, medication is recommended to prevent specific stone types. For example, thiazide diuretics for hypercalciuria, allopurinol for uric acid stones, or potassium citrate for low urinary citrate levels.
