Mr Syed Ali Shahzad provides specialist assessment and treatment for a wide range of bladder conditions. These include blood in the urine, bladder cancer, overactive bladder, urinary incontinence and recurrent urinary tract infections. He offers a full range of diagnostic investigations and treatments, all consultant-led.
Bladder Conditions
Blood in the Urine (Haematuria)
Blood in the urine is always a symptom that needs assessment by a specialist. It can be visible to the naked eye or detected on urine testing. Causes include urinary tract infections, kidney stones, bladder cancer or kidney conditions. Mr Shahzad will carry out a thorough investigation to identify the cause. Learn more about haematuria assessment.
Bladder Cancer
Bladder cancer is more common in men and in those over 60. The most common symptom is blood in the urine. Early detection and treatment greatly improve outcomes. Mr Shahzad provides prompt assessment, cystoscopy, biopsy and treatment including TURBT. Learn more about bladder cancer.
Overactive Bladder
Overactive bladder (OAB) causes a sudden urge to urinate that can be difficult to control, often with increased frequency and waking at night to pass urine. It can have a significant impact on daily life and sleep. A range of treatments is available, from lifestyle changes and medication through to procedures such as bladder Botox. Learn more about overactive bladder.
Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine. It can take different forms, including urgency incontinence (linked to overactive bladder), stress incontinence and overflow incontinence. Learn more about urinary incontinence.
Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
Recurrent UTIs can be debilitating and distressing. Mr Shahzad will investigate the underlying cause and advise on a management plan, which may include preventative strategies, bladder instillation therapy or other interventions. Learn more about recurrent UTI and painful bladder.
Other Bladder Conditions
- Bladder stones
- Urinary retention
- Nocturia (getting up at night to urinate)
- Interstitial cystitis / painful bladder syndrome
- Bladder pain
Bladder Treatments and Procedures
Cystoscopy
Cystoscopy uses a thin camera (cystoscope) passed through the urethra to examine the inside of the bladder. It is an important diagnostic tool for blood in the urine, bladder cancer investigation and other bladder conditions. It can be carried out as a flexible (awake) or rigid (under anaesthetic) procedure. Learn more about cystoscopy.
TURBT (Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumour)
TURBT is a procedure to remove bladder tumours through the natural urinary passage. It is used both as a diagnostic procedure (providing a tissue sample for analysis) and as a treatment for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Learn more about TURBT.
Bladder Botox Injections
Botulinum toxin injections into the bladder wall can significantly reduce the symptoms of overactive bladder when other treatments have not worked. The treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic and typically takes around 30 minutes. Learn more about bladder Botox.
Bladder Instillation
Bladder instillation involves passing a solution directly into the bladder through a catheter. It is used in the management of interstitial cystitis and recurrent UTI. Learn more about bladder instillation.
Urodynamics and Flow Testing
Urodynamic studies measure how the bladder and urethra are performing. A flow test measures the speed and volume of urine flow. These investigations help to identify the cause of urinary symptoms and guide treatment. Learn more about urodynamics.
