Urinary Incontinence Treatment in Birmingham
Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine. It affects millions of people in the UK, yet many suffer in silence due to embarrassment. Effective treatments are available for most types of incontinence. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, provides expert assessment and management of urinary incontinence at private hospitals across Birmingham.
Types of Urinary Incontinence
- Stress urinary incontinence (SUI): Leakage on physical activity that raises abdominal pressure, such as coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercise. Caused by weakness of the urethral sphincter or pelvic floor.
- Urgency urinary incontinence (UUI): Leakage associated with a sudden, uncontrollable urge to urinate. Caused by overactive bladder.
- Mixed incontinence: A combination of stress and urgency incontinence.
- Overflow incontinence: See overflow incontinence. Caused by incomplete bladder emptying due to outflow obstruction or an underactive bladder.
Assessment
A thorough assessment includes a detailed history, bladder diary, physical examination, urine tests, flow rate measurement and post-void residual ultrasound. Urodynamic studies may be recommended to characterise the type of incontinence accurately before treatment.
Treatment
Treatment options depend on the type and severity of incontinence:
- Pelvic floor muscle training and physiotherapy
- Bladder retraining
- Medications (antimuscarinics, beta-3 agonists, duloxetine)
- Bladder Botox injections for urgency incontinence
- Surgical options for stress incontinence (urethral sling procedures or colposuspension)
- Sacral neuromodulation
