Overflow Incontinence Treatment in Birmingham
Overflow incontinence is a type of urinary incontinence caused by a constantly or repeatedly overfull bladder that leaks urine involuntarily. It is more common in men than in women and is often the result of an underlying condition causing urinary retention. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, diagnoses and treats overflow incontinence at private hospitals across Birmingham.
Causes
- Bladder outflow obstruction due to BPH, urethral stricture or bladder neck obstruction
- An underactive detrusor (detrusor hypocontractility) due to neurological disease, diabetes or medications
- Post-surgical damage to the bladder nerves
Symptoms
- Frequent or constant dribbling of urine
- Difficulty starting urination or a weak stream
- A feeling of incomplete bladder emptying
- Frequent urinary tract infections
Diagnosis and Treatment
Assessment includes urine tests, bladder scan for post-void residual, flow rate measurement and urodynamics. Treatment is directed at the underlying cause. Outflow obstruction is treated by relieving the obstruction (e.g., treating BPH or stricture). An underactive bladder may be managed with clean intermittent self-catheterisation (CISC) as a long-term solution.
