Urodynamic Studies in Birmingham

Urodynamic studies are a group of tests that measure how well the bladder and urethra store and release urine. They provide objective, detailed information about bladder function that cannot be obtained from symptoms or other investigations alone. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, performs urodynamic testing at private hospitals across Birmingham.

When Are Urodynamics Performed?

Urodynamics are recommended when the precise cause of lower urinary tract symptoms needs to be established before treatment, particularly for:

Types of Urodynamic Tests

  • Uroflowmetry: Measures urine flow rate and voiding pattern. A simple, non-invasive test.
  • Post-void residual (PVR): Ultrasound measurement of urine remaining in the bladder after voiding.
  • Cystometry: A thin catheter is placed in the bladder and rectum. The bladder is filled with sterile water while pressures are measured. This assesses bladder capacity, compliance, detrusor overactivity and sphincter function.
  • Pressure-flow study: Measures the relationship between bladder pressure and urine flow during voiding to assess for outflow obstruction or detrusor underactivity.
  • Video urodynamics: Cystometry combined with fluoroscopic (X-ray) imaging for complex cases.
