Prostate Biopsy in Birmingham

A prostate biopsy is the only way to definitively confirm or exclude prostate cancer. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, performs prostate biopsies using modern, targeted techniques at private hospitals across Birmingham to maximise accuracy whilst minimising discomfort and complication risk.

When Is a Prostate Biopsy Needed?

A biopsy is recommended when PSA testing and/or MRI of the prostate raises concern about prostate cancer. It may also be considered if digital rectal examination reveals an abnormality, or if PSA is rising despite a previous negative biopsy.

Types of Prostate Biopsy

  • Transperineal (TP) biopsy: Biopsies are taken through the skin between the scrotum and anus under local or general anaesthetic. This approach eliminates the risk of rectal bacteria entering the prostate, significantly reducing the risk of post-biopsy sepsis. It is now the preferred method in most centres in the UK.
  • Transrectal ultrasound-guided (TRUS) biopsy: Biopsies are taken through the rectal wall under ultrasound guidance. This approach carries a small but meaningful risk of infection and is being replaced by the transperineal approach.
  • MRI-targeted biopsy: Using pre-biopsy MRI images to direct biopsies precisely to suspicious lesions identified on MRI, maximising the detection of clinically significant cancer.

What to Expect

The procedure is performed under local or general anaesthetic as a day case. Patients are given prophylactic antibiotics. Some mild discomfort, blood in the urine or semen, and urinary symptoms for a few days after the procedure are normal. Results are typically available within 7 to 10 working days.
