Reasons for cystoscopy
- Blood in the urine
- Recurrent urinary symptoms
- Bladder pain or suspected bladder abnormality
Cystoscopy is the direct visual examination of the inside of the bladder and urethra using a thin, lighted telescope called a cystoscope. It is one of the most important diagnostic tools in urology. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, performs flexible and rigid cystoscopy at private hospitals across Birmingham.
Cystoscopy is used to investigate and manage:
Flexible cystoscopy uses a thin, steerable, flexible cystoscope and is performed under local anaesthetic gel as an outpatient procedure. It is comfortable for most patients and provides excellent visualisation of the bladder and urethra. Most patients can drive home and return to normal activities immediately.
Rigid cystoscopy uses a straight, rigid telescope and is performed under general or spinal anaesthetic. It allows use of working instruments within the bladder for procedures such as biopsy, TURBT, stone fragmentation and Botox injection.
Flexible cystoscopy takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Results are discussed with you immediately, and Mr Shahzad explains any findings clearly. There may be mild discomfort or urinary symptoms for 24 to 48 hours afterwards.
No GP referral is required. Mr Shahzad is recognised by BUPA, AXA, AVIVA, Vitality, Cigna and WPA. Book an appointment or contact us.
Consultant-led private urology care
Cystoscopy is a camera examination of the bladder and urethra. It can help investigate blood in the urine, recurrent urinary symptoms, bladder pain, suspected bladder stones or other urinary tract concerns.
Mr Shahzad will explain why cystoscopy is being considered, what it can show and whether other tests such as imaging or urine tests are needed. Patients are also advised when symptoms should be treated urgently rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
