TURBT (Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumour) in Birmingham

TURBT (transurethral resection of bladder tumour) is the surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat bladder cancer. It is both a diagnostic and therapeutic operation. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, performs TURBT at private hospitals across Birmingham.

What Is TURBT?

TURBT is performed under general or spinal anaesthetic. A resectoscope is passed through the urethra into the bladder without any skin incisions. The bladder is inspected with a camera, and any visible tumours are resected (cut away) using an electrically heated loop. The resected material is sent for pathological analysis to determine the cancer type, grade and depth of invasion, which is essential for staging and planning further treatment.

Why TURBT Is Important

TURBT serves three purposes:

  1. Diagnosis: Confirms bladder cancer and provides tissue for histological analysis.
  2. Staging: Determines whether the cancer has invaded the bladder muscle (MIBC) or remains superficial (NMIBC).
  3. Treatment: Removes visible tumour completely in many cases of non-muscle-invasive disease.

After TURBT

Most patients are discharged the same day or the following morning. Some blood in the urine and urinary symptoms for 1 to 2 weeks are normal. A single dose of intravesical chemotherapy (mitomycin C) may be instilled into the bladder immediately after TURBT to reduce recurrence risk. Cystoscopy surveillance and further treatment depend on the pathology results.
