Bladder Stones Treatment in Birmingham
Bladder stones (vesical calculi) are hardened mineral deposits that form inside the bladder. They differ from kidney stones in that they typically develop within the bladder itself, often as a result of an underlying condition that prevents the bladder from emptying completely. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, treats bladder stones at private hospitals across Birmingham.
Causes of Bladder Stones
Bladder stones most commonly develop when urine stagnates in the bladder. Contributing factors include:
- Bladder outlet obstruction due to enlarged prostate (BPH)
- Urinary retention
- Urethral stricture
- Neurogenic bladder
- Urinary tract infections
- Kidney stones that have passed down into the bladder
Symptoms
- Pelvic or lower abdominal pain
- Pain or difficulty urinating
- Urinary frequency or urgency
- Interruption of the urinary stream
- Blood in the urine
- Recurrent urinary tract infections
Diagnosis and Treatment
Bladder stones are usually confirmed on ultrasound scan or CT. Treatment involves removing the stones and, crucially, addressing the underlying cause to prevent recurrence. Stones can be fragmented using a cystoscope and laser or mechanical device (cystolithotripsy) as a day-case procedure under general anaesthetic. The cause of bladder outflow obstruction, such as BPH, is then treated to prevent further stone formation.
