Bladder Pain Treatment in Birmingham
Bladder pain is a distressing and often debilitating symptom that can have several causes, ranging from simple infection to complex chronic conditions. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, provides specialist assessment and treatment for bladder pain at private hospitals across Birmingham.
Common Causes of Bladder Pain
- Cystitis (urinary tract infection): The most common cause of bladder pain, particularly in women. Typically associated with burning on urination, frequency and urgency.
- Interstitial cystitis / bladder pain syndrome: A chronic condition causing persistent bladder pain and pressure without infection.
- Bladder stones: Can cause lower abdominal or pelvic pain, particularly on urination.
- Bladder cancer: Pain is less common in early bladder cancer but may occur in more advanced disease.
- Bladder spasm: Involuntary contractions of the bladder muscle causing sudden, severe pain or urgency.
- Pelvic floor dysfunction: Tension or dysfunction in the pelvic floor muscles can mimic bladder pain.
Assessment and Diagnosis
A thorough history, physical examination, urine tests, and where appropriate cystoscopy and imaging, allow accurate identification of the cause of bladder pain. Mr Shahzad also liaises with gynaecology and pain management colleagues where a multidisciplinary approach is beneficial.
