Cystitis and Recurrent UTIs in Birmingham
Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder, most often caused by a bacterial urinary tract infection (UTI). It is extremely common, particularly in women. Recurrent cystitis can significantly impair quality of life and may indicate an underlying cause requiring investigation. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, provides expert assessment and management of cystitis at private hospitals across Birmingham.
Symptoms
- Burning or stinging sensation on urination
- Urinary frequency
- Urgency to pass urine
- Cloudy, dark or strong-smelling urine
- Lower abdominal discomfort or pressure
- Blood in the urine (haematuria)
Recurrent Cystitis
Recurrent UTIs are defined as two or more infections in six months or three or more in a year. They warrant further investigation to exclude underlying factors such as bladder outflow obstruction, bladder stones, anatomical abnormalities, incomplete bladder emptying or bladder cancer. Mr Shahzad performs a thorough assessment including urine cultures, imaging and flexible cystoscopy where indicated.
Treatment
Uncomplicated cystitis is treated with antibiotics. For recurrent infections, management may include low-dose prophylactic antibiotics, self-start antibiotic therapy, vaginal oestrogen (in post-menopausal women), intravesical instillation with hyaluronic acid, and vaccination against certain urinary pathogens. Any identified structural cause is treated appropriately.
