Kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma) is among the ten most common cancers in the UK. When diagnosed early, it is highly treatable. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, is an experienced kidney cancer specialist offering the full range of surgical and oncological management at private hospitals in Birmingham.

Mr Shahzad chairs the weekly Uro-oncology Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meeting at Dudley Group of Hospitals NHS Trust and is a Principal Investigator in national cancer research trials, ensuring his patients benefit from the latest evidence-based approaches.

What Is Kidney Cancer?

Kidney cancer most commonly originates in the cells lining the kidney tubules. It is more prevalent in people over 60 and is associated with risk factors including smoking, obesity, hypertension and a family history of the condition. Most kidney tumours are discovered incidentally on scans performed for other reasons.

Symptoms of Kidney Cancer

Many kidney cancers are symptomless in early stages. When symptoms do occur, they may include:

  • Blood in the urine (haematuria)
  • A persistent lump or pain in the side or lower back
  • Unexplained weight loss or fatigue
  • A persistent high temperature
  • Night sweats

Diagnosis

Diagnosis typically involves CT or MRI scanning with and without contrast to characterise the tumour and assess for spread. Blood tests assess kidney function and overall health. In selected cases, a renal biopsy may be performed.

Treatment Options

  • Robotic radical nephrectomy: Removal of the entire kidney using the da Vinci robotic system, offering precision and faster recovery compared with open surgery.
  • Partial nephrectomy: Nephron-sparing surgery to remove the tumour while preserving as much healthy kidney tissue as possible. The preferred approach for smaller tumours.
  • Active surveillance: For small, slow-growing tumours in older or less fit patients, careful monitoring may be appropriate.
  • Ablative therapies: Cryoablation or radiofrequency ablation for selected patients.
