Partial Nephrectomy

Consultant-led assessment and treatment planning with Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon.

Partial Nephrectomy in Birmingham

Partial nephrectomy is kidney-sparing surgery that removes a tumour while preserving the remaining healthy kidney tissue. It is the preferred treatment for most small kidney tumours and is associated with excellent cancer control and preservation of kidney function. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, performs robotic and laparoscopic partial nephrectomy at private hospitals in Birmingham.

What Is Partial Nephrectomy?

Unlike radical nephrectomy, which removes the entire kidney, partial nephrectomy excises only the tumour and a small margin of surrounding healthy tissue. This nephron-sparing approach is preferred wherever feasible, as preserving kidney function reduces the long-term risk of chronic kidney disease and its associated cardiovascular complications.

When Is Partial Nephrectomy Recommended?

Partial nephrectomy is recommended for:

  • Small kidney tumours (typically under 7cm)
  • Tumours in anatomically favourable positions
  • Patients with a single kidney or impaired contralateral kidney function
  • Patients at risk of chronic kidney disease

Robotic Partial Nephrectomy

The robotic approach provides enhanced three-dimensional magnification and precise instrument control that is particularly advantageous during partial nephrectomy, where the tumour must be excised cleanly while minimising warm ischaemia time (the period during which blood supply to the kidney is clamped). Mr Shahzad uses the da Vinci robotic system to achieve optimal resection margins and renal reconstruction.

Recovery

Hospital stay is typically 2 to 3 nights. Most patients can return to light activities within 2 to 3 weeks and to full normal activities within 4 to 6 weeks. Follow-up imaging is arranged to monitor for any recurrence.
