Robotic Nephrectomy

Consultant-led assessment and treatment planning with Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon.

Robotic Nephrectomy in Birmingham

Robotic nephrectomy is the surgical removal of a kidney using the da Vinci robotic system, offering greater precision, less blood loss and faster recovery compared with open surgery. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, is an experienced robotic surgeon who pioneered the introduction of remote proctoring for da Vinci robotic surgery at his NHS Trust. He performs robotic nephrectomy at leading private hospitals in Birmingham.

What Is a Robotic Nephrectomy?

Nephrectomy means surgical removal of the kidney. A radical nephrectomy removes the entire kidney and is the main treatment for localised kidney cancer. A robotic approach means the surgery is performed through several small keyhole incisions using robotic arms controlled by Mr Shahzad at a console, guided by a high-definition 3D view of the surgical site.

When Is Robotic Nephrectomy Recommended?

  • Kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma) not amenable to partial nephrectomy
  • Non-functioning kidney due to obstruction or recurrent infection
  • Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (combined with ureter removal)

The Procedure

The operation is performed under general anaesthetic. Several small incisions (0.5 to 1.5cm) are made in the abdomen. The robotic arms, carrying surgical instruments and a camera, are inserted through these ports. Mr Shahzad operates the robot from a console while viewing a magnified, three-dimensional image of the anatomy. The kidney is carefully dissected free, the blood vessels are secured, and the kidney is removed through a slightly enlarged port site. The operation typically takes 2 to 3 hours.

Benefits of Robotic vs Open Nephrectomy

  • Smaller incisions and reduced scarring
  • Less blood loss and lower transfusion rate
  • Shorter hospital stay (typically 1 to 2 nights)
  • Reduced post-operative pain
  • Faster return to normal activities
  • Equivalent or superior oncological outcomes to open surgery

Recovery

Most patients are discharged within 1 to 2 days. Light activities can usually be resumed within 2 weeks and full normal activities within 4 to 6 weeks. Mr Shahzad provides detailed pre- and post-operative information and outpatient follow-up to monitor recovery and review pathology results.
