Kidney Cysts Treatment in Birmingham
Kidney cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop in or on the kidneys. They are extremely common, particularly in people over 50, and are most often benign (non-cancerous). However, some cysts require careful monitoring or treatment. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, offers expert assessment and management of kidney cysts at private hospitals across Birmingham.
Types of Kidney Cysts
The most common type is a simple renal cyst, which is almost always benign. Complex cysts have features such as thick walls, calcifications or internal debris, which can occasionally indicate malignancy and require further investigation. Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is an inherited condition causing multiple cysts that can affect kidney function over time.
Symptoms
Most simple kidney cysts cause no symptoms and are discovered incidentally during an ultrasound or CT scan performed for another reason. Larger cysts or complex cysts may cause:
- A dull ache or pain in the side, back or abdomen
- Blood in the urine
- Frequent urinary tract infections
- High blood pressure (in some cases)
Diagnosis
Kidney cysts are usually identified on ultrasound scan. A CT scan or MRI may be performed to characterise the cyst further, particularly if it has complex features. Mr Shahzad uses the Bosniak classification system to assess the risk of malignancy and determine the appropriate management strategy.
Treatment Options
Simple cysts that cause no symptoms generally require no treatment, only periodic monitoring. Treatment may be recommended if a cyst is large, causing symptoms or has complex features. Options include:
- Aspiration and sclerotherapy: The cyst is drained using a needle under ultrasound guidance, then a sclerosing agent is injected to prevent refilling.
- Laparoscopic (keyhole) cyst decortication: The roof of the cyst is removed surgically using minimally invasive techniques, offering a more durable result.
