Bladder Diverticulum Treatment in Birmingham
A bladder diverticulum is a pouch or sac that protrudes through the bladder wall, caused by a weakness in the muscular layer. Urine can collect in these pouches, leading to recurrent infections and other complications. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, diagnoses and treats bladder diverticula at private hospitals across Birmingham.
Causes
Bladder diverticula most commonly develop as a result of chronic bladder outflow obstruction (such as from BPH or urethral stricture), which causes raised bladder pressure and herniation of the bladder mucosa through weakened areas in the muscle. Congenital diverticula also occur, usually near the ureteric orifices.
Symptoms and Complications
- Recurrent urinary tract infections
- Two-phase urination (a second stream of urine when standing up after voiding)
- Haematuria (blood in the urine)
- Incomplete bladder emptying
- Rarely, tumours can develop within a diverticulum
Diagnosis and Treatment
Bladder diverticula are typically identified on CT or ultrasound, and characterised further with cystoscopy. Small, asymptomatic diverticula may not require treatment. Larger or symptomatic diverticula are best excised surgically, which Mr Shahzad can perform laparoscopically (keyhole surgery). Treating the underlying outflow obstruction is equally important.
