Bladder Neck Incision in Birmingham

Bladder neck incision (BNI) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to relieve bladder neck obstruction by making one or two small cuts in the bladder neck muscle, allowing it to open more freely during urination. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, performs bladder neck incision at private hospitals across Birmingham.

When Is BNI Performed?

BNI is most commonly performed for:

  • Primary bladder neck dysfunction in young men
  • Bladder neck contracture (scarring) following previous prostate surgery or TURP
  • Bladder neck stenosis after radiotherapy

The Procedure

BNI is performed under general or spinal anaesthetic as a day-case procedure. A resectoscope is passed through the urethra. Small incisions are made at the bladder neck at the 5 and 7 o’clock positions using a cold knife or electrosurgical device. A catheter may be placed overnight and removed the following morning. The procedure takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

Outcomes

BNI is highly effective for bladder neck dysfunction and contracture. Most men experience significant improvement in urinary flow and symptoms. The main risk is retrograde ejaculation, occurring in a proportion of men, which should be discussed with Mr Shahzad before the procedure.
