Ureteroscopy for Kidney Stones in Birmingham
Ureteroscopy is a safe, effective and minimally invasive procedure for treating kidney stones and other conditions of the ureter. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, performs ureteroscopy at private hospitals across Birmingham including the Priory Hospital, Harborne Hospital and Spire Little Aston.
What Is Ureteroscopy?
Ureteroscopy involves passing a thin telescope through the urethra and bladder into the ureter, without any skin incisions, to directly visualise and treat the problem. When combined with holmium laser lithotripsy, it allows stones to be fragmented and removed precisely and safely.
When Is Ureteroscopy Used?
Ureteroscopy is the treatment of choice for:
- Ureteric stones (stones stuck in the tube between the kidney and bladder)
- Kidney stones not suitable for shockwave lithotripsy
- Stones that have not passed despite conservative management
- Stones causing infection or persistent pain
- Investigation of haematuria or suspicious lesions in the ureter or kidney
The Procedure
Ureteroscopy is performed under general anaesthetic, usually as a day-case procedure. The ureteroscope is passed gently through the natural urinary passages. A laser fibre is used to break the stone into small fragments, which are either removed with a retrieval basket or dusted so finely that they pass naturally. A temporary ureteric stent may be left in place after the procedure, depending on the circumstances.
Recovery After Ureteroscopy
Most patients are discharged the same day and can return to light activities within a day or two. Some urinary symptoms such as stinging or frequency are common for a few days. Mr Shahzad provides clear written post-operative instructions and follow-up to ensure complete recovery.
