Premature Ejaculation Treatment in Birmingham
Premature ejaculation (PE) is one of the most common male sexual problems, affecting up to 30% of men at some point in their lives. It is defined as ejaculation that occurs sooner than desired, either before or shortly after penetration, causing distress or interpersonal difficulty. Effective treatments are available. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, provides discreet, expert assessment and management of premature ejaculation at private hospitals across Birmingham.
Types of Premature Ejaculation
- Lifelong (primary) PE: Present since first sexual experience; often has a neurobiological basis.
- Acquired (secondary) PE: Develops after a period of normal ejaculatory function; may be related to erectile dysfunction, thyroid disease, prostatitis or psychological factors.
Assessment
A thorough history, including sexual and medical history, helps identify the type and contributing factors. Physical examination and blood tests (including thyroid function and hormone levels) may be performed where indicated.
Treatment
- Behavioural techniques: The stop-start and squeeze techniques, often used alongside psychosexual counselling.
- Topical anaesthetic agents: Lidocaine or prilocaine-containing sprays or creams applied to the glans penis to reduce sensitivity.
- SSRI medications: Daily or on-demand dapoxetine (Priligy) or other SSRIs are the most effective pharmacological treatments.
- Treating underlying causes: Managing ED, prostatitis or other contributing conditions.
