Frenuloplasty in Birmingham
Frenuloplasty is a minor surgical procedure to lengthen or release a tight frenulum (the small band of tissue that connects the underside of the foreskin to the glans of the penis). It is performed as an alternative to circumcision when the only problem is frenulum tightness. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, performs frenuloplasty at private hospitals across Birmingham.
What Is a Tight Frenulum?
A tight or short frenulum (frenulum breve) can restrict full retraction of the foreskin during erection, causing discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse, and sometimes leading to small tears during sex. It may be present alone or in combination with phimosis.
The Procedure
Frenuloplasty is performed as a day-case procedure under local or general anaesthetic. A small transverse incision is made in the frenulum, allowing it to be lengthened and sutured in a longitudinal direction to relieve the tension. The procedure takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Absorbable sutures are used, so removal is not required.
Recovery
Most men can return to light activities within a day or two. Sexual intercourse should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks to allow full healing. Mild discomfort and swelling settle within 2 weeks for most men.
