UroLift for Enlarged Prostate in Birmingham

UroLift is a minimally invasive, NICE-approved procedure for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) that provides rapid relief from urinary symptoms without cutting, heating or removing prostate tissue. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, offers UroLift at private hospitals across Birmingham.

What Is UroLift?

UroLift uses small, permanent implants to lift and hold the enlarged prostate lobes away from the urethra, creating a wider channel for urine to flow through. The implants are placed using a cystoscope under direct vision. No tissue is cut or removed, and no heat is applied.

Benefits of UroLift

  • Preserves sexual function: UroLift does not cause retrograde ejaculation. Clinical trials demonstrate no negative impact on ejaculatory or erectile function.
  • Rapid recovery: Most patients resume normal activities within days. Many procedures are performed under local anaesthetic as a day case.
  • No catheter required: In most cases, no overnight catheter is needed.
  • Quick symptom improvement: Many patients notice improvement within 2 to 4 weeks.
  • NICE approved: NICE Technology Appraisal TA471 recommends UroLift for men wishing to avoid medication side effects or preserve sexual function.

Who Is Suitable for UroLift?

UroLift is most effective for men with a prostate size of 30 to 80ml, no prominent obstructive median lobe, and a wish to preserve ejaculatory function. For men with a larger prostate, a prominent median lobe, or more severe symptoms, Aquablation or Rezum may be more appropriate.

Comparing UroLift, Rezum and Aquablation

All three procedures aim to relieve BPH symptoms whilst preserving sexual function. Mr Shahzad assesses each patient individually to recommend the most suitable option based on prostate size, anatomy, symptom severity and personal priorities. See our page on BPH treatment options for a full comparison.
