Varicocele Repair in Birmingham

Varicocele repair (varicocelectomy) is a surgical procedure to seal or tie off the dilated veins of a varicocele, with the goal of improving sperm parameters, fertility and testicular discomfort. When Is Varicocele Repair Recommended?

Varicocele repair is considered in men with:

• Abnormal semen analysis parameters (low count, poor motility or morphology) and a desire to conceive
• Evidence of progressive testicular atrophy (shrinkage)
• Significant testicular discomfort or pain attributable to the varicocele
• Adolescent boys with significant testicular size discrepancy

Approaches to Varicocele Repair

• Microscopic subinguinal varicocelectomy: The gold standard surgical approach, performed under magnification (operating microscope or surgical loupes) through a small subinguinal incision. High ligation rates and very low recurrence rates. Lowest risk of hydrocele formation as collateral lymphatics are preserved.
• Laparoscopic varicocelectomy: A keyhole approach using small abdominal incisions. Suitable for bilateral varicoceles.
• Radiological embolisation: A non-surgical procedure in which the radiologist passes a catheter to block the varicocele veins under X-ray guidance. Performed under local anaesthetic; quick recovery.

Outcomes

Varicocele repair improves semen parameters in approximately 60 to 70% of men and leads to natural pregnancy in 30 to 40%. When successful, results are seen over 3 to 9 months as sperm production cycles complete.
