Obstructive Uropathy Treatment in Birmingham
Obstructive uropathy refers to any condition in which the flow of urine is obstructed at any point in the urinary tract. If left untreated, it can cause permanent kidney damage. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, provides expert assessment and management of obstructive uropathy at private hospitals across Birmingham.
Causes
Obstruction can occur at different levels of the urinary tract. Common causes include kidney or ureteric stones, benign prostatic hyperplasia, urethral stricture, tumours, pelvic organ prolapse and congenital abnormalities such as PUJ obstruction.
Symptoms
Depending on the site and cause of obstruction, symptoms may include loin pain, difficulty passing urine, poor urine flow, urinary retention, recurrent infections and haematuria. In some cases, obstruction is painless and is only identified through abnormal kidney function tests or imaging.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Investigations include imaging (ultrasound, CT urogram), kidney function tests and, in some cases, urodynamic studies. Treatment is directed at relieving the obstruction and protecting kidney function. Mr Shahzad employs minimally invasive and robotic techniques wherever possible, including robotic pyeloplasty, ureteroscopy and laparoscopic approaches for complex cases.
