Balanitis Treatment in Birmingham
Balanitis is inflammation of the glans (head of the penis), which may also involve the foreskin (balanoposthitis). It is a common condition, particularly in uncircumcised men, and can be caused by infection, skin conditions or irritants. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, assesses and treats balanitis at private hospitals across Birmingham.
Causes
- Poor hygiene leading to accumulation of smegma
- Fungal infection (candida/thrush) – the most common cause
- Bacterial infection
- Sexually transmitted infections
- Skin conditions: lichen sclerosus (BXO), lichen planus, psoriasis, contact dermatitis
- Diabetes mellitus (predisposes to fungal and bacterial infection)
- Irritants: soaps, detergents, latex
Symptoms
- Redness, swelling and soreness of the glans
- Itching or burning
- Discharge from under the foreskin
- Tight foreskin (phimosis)
- Pain on urination
Treatment
Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Candidal balanitis responds to topical antifungal cream. Bacterial infection requires antibiotics. Lichen sclerosus is managed with potent topical steroids and, where scarring has caused phimosis, with circumcision. Good hygiene and, in selected cases, circumcision prevent recurrence.
