Adult Circumcision in Birmingham
Adult circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin. It is performed for medical indications including phimosis, recurrent balanitis, lichen sclerosus (BXO) and, in some cases, religious or personal preference. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, performs adult circumcision at private hospitals across Birmingham.
Medical Indications for Circumcision
- Phimosis: Tightness of the foreskin preventing retraction, particularly when caused by lichen sclerosus (scarring) that has not responded to topical steroids.
- Recurrent balanitis or balanoposthitis: Repeated infections that have not responded to medical management.
- Paraphimosis: Inability to return a retracted foreskin to its normal position (this is a medical emergency when acute).
- Foreskin tumours.
The Procedure
Adult circumcision is performed as a day-case procedure under general or local anaesthetic. The foreskin is removed using a sleeve-type excision to ensure a neat cosmetic result. Absorbable sutures are used. The procedure takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
Recovery
There is usually some swelling and discomfort for 2 to 3 weeks. Most men can return to desk work within a week. Sexual intercourse should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks. Mr Shahzad provides detailed post-operative instructions and wound care advice.
