Epididymo-Orchitis Treatment in Birmingham

Epididymo-orchitis is inflammation of both the epididymis and the testicle, typically caused by infection spreading from the epididymis into the adjacent testicular tissue. It produces more severe symptoms than epididymitis alone and requires prompt treatment. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, assesses and manages epididymo-orchitis at private hospitals across Birmingham.

Causes and Symptoms

The causes are similar to those of epididymitis. Symptoms include severe scrotal pain and swelling, often with fever, nausea and general malaise. The entire testis and epididymis may be tender and enlarged.

Diagnosis

Scrotal ultrasound with Doppler is essential to confirm the diagnosis, assess the degree of inflammation and blood supply, and exclude testicular torsion or abscess formation. Urine and STI tests guide antibiotic selection.

Treatment and Complications

Treatment is with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication and scrotal support. Severe cases may require hospitalisation for intravenous antibiotics. Complications include abscess formation (requiring surgical drainage) and, rarely, infarction of the testis or testicular atrophy, which can affect fertility. Prompt treatment reduces the risk of complications.
