Orchidectomy in Birmingham

Orchidectomy is the surgical removal of a testicle. It is the primary treatment for testicular cancer and is also performed in other circumstances such as severe infection or trauma leading to non-viable testicular tissue. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, performs orchidectomy at private hospitals across Birmingham.

Reasons for Orchidectomy

  • Testicular cancer: Radical inguinal orchidectomy (removal through an incision in the groin) is the standard initial treatment for suspected testicular cancer, providing definitive diagnosis and treatment in one procedure.
  • Testicular infarction or gangrene: Following severe or prolonged testicular torsion when the testicle is not viable.
  • Severe epididymo-orchitis with abscess: In rare cases when antibiotic treatment fails.
  • Hormone therapy for prostate cancer: Bilateral orchidectomy (surgical castration) can be performed as an alternative to medical androgen deprivation for advanced prostate cancer.

The Procedure

Radical orchidectomy for testicular cancer is performed through a groin (inguinal) incision under general or spinal anaesthetic. The spermatic cord is controlled high in the groin before the testicle is removed, to minimise the risk of tumour spread. The procedure takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes and is usually a day-case or overnight admission. A prosthetic testicular implant can be inserted at the same time or later if wished.

After Orchidectomy

Pathology results are discussed at a follow-up consultation. Further treatment (surveillance, chemotherapy or radiotherapy) depends on the cancer type and stage. Mr Shahzad works closely with oncology colleagues to ensure coordinated care.
