Kidney Disease in Birmingham
Kidney disease encompasses a range of conditions affecting the structure and function of the kidneys. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, provides expert urological assessment and management of kidney disease at private hospitals across Birmingham and the West Midlands.
Types of Kidney Disease
Urologically relevant kidney diseases include:
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD): A gradual loss of kidney function over time, often caused by hypertension or diabetes but also by obstructive uropathy, recurrent infections or structural abnormalities.
- Urological obstruction: Conditions such as obstructive uropathy or hydronephrosis where urine cannot drain freely from the kidney, causing progressive damage.
- Recurrent kidney infections (pyelonephritis): Repeated infections can scar the kidney and impair function.
- Structural abnormalities: Conditions such as pelvi-ureteric junction (PUJ) obstruction, which can be corrected surgically with robotic pyeloplasty.
Symptoms
Kidney disease may be symptomless in early stages. Symptoms that can indicate a urological cause of kidney disease include:
- Loin pain or discomfort
- Recurrent urinary tract infections
- Blood in the urine
- Difficulty passing urine
- Swelling in the legs or ankles
- Fatigue and reduced urine output
