Balanoposthitis Treatment in Birmingham

Balanoposthitis is inflammation affecting both the glans (head of the penis) and the foreskin simultaneously. It is essentially a more extensive form of balanitis. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, assesses and manages balanoposthitis at private hospitals across Birmingham.

Causes and Symptoms

The causes are the same as for balanitis: candidal infection (the most common), bacterial infection, skin conditions such as lichen sclerosus or psoriasis, and irritants. Symptoms include redness, swelling, discharge and soreness involving both the glans and the inner surface of the foreskin.

Recurrent Balanoposthitis

Recurrent episodes of balanoposthitis can lead to scarring of the foreskin (phimosis) and require thorough investigation to identify the underlying cause. Skin biopsy may be recommended if a specific skin condition is suspected. In men with recurrent episodes not responding to medical treatment, circumcision is often the most effective long-term solution.
