Green Light Laser Therapy for Enlarged Prostate in Birmingham
Green Light laser therapy (photoselective vaporisation of the prostate, or PVP) is an effective, minimally invasive surgical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, offers Green Light laser prostatectomy at private hospitals across Birmingham.
What Is Green Light Laser Therapy?
Green Light laser therapy uses a high-powered 532nm wavelength laser (producing a characteristic green light) to vaporise excess prostate tissue, widening the urinary channel and improving urine flow. Unlike TURP, there is minimal bleeding, making it particularly suitable for men on anticoagulant medication. The procedure is performed entirely through the urethra, with no skin incisions.
Benefits of Green Light Laser Therapy
- Minimal blood loss, suitable for men on blood thinners
- Day-case or short stay procedure
- Rapid symptomatic improvement
- Catheter removal often the same day or the following morning
- Suitable for larger prostates
- Proven long-term effectiveness comparable to TURP
Who Is Suitable?
Green Light laser therapy is suitable for most men with BPH, including those with larger prostates and those who cannot safely stop anticoagulants. It is less suitable for men with very small prostates, for whom UroLift or Rezum may be preferable.
Considerations
Like TURP, Green Light laser therapy can cause retrograde ejaculation (semen passing into the bladder) in a proportion of men. For patients particularly wishing to preserve ejaculatory function, Aquablation or Rezum therapy may be more appropriate.
