TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate) in Birmingham
Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a surgical procedure to remove part of the prostate gland that has grown too large and is causing urinary symptoms. It is one of the most established surgical treatments for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, performs bipolar TURP at private hospitals across Birmingham.
What Is TURP?
TURP is performed using a resectoscope, an instrument passed through the urethra without any skin incisions. The surgeon uses an electrically heated loop to cut away excess prostate tissue, widening the channel through which urine flows. Mr Shahzad performs bipolar TURP, which uses saline irrigation and reduces the risk of the “TURP syndrome” (dilutional hyponatraemia) associated with the older monopolar technique.
When Is TURP Recommended?
TURP is appropriate for men with moderate to severe BPH symptoms who have not responded adequately to medication, or who have complications of BPH such as urinary retention, recurrent infections or bladder stones. It is particularly effective for larger prostates where minimally invasive options such as UroLift or Rezum are less suitable.
The Procedure
TURP is performed under general or spinal anaesthetic as an inpatient procedure, typically requiring 1 to 2 nights in hospital. A urinary catheter is placed at the end of the operation and usually removed after 24 to 48 hours once the urine has cleared.
Recovery and Outcomes
Most men notice a significant improvement in urinary symptoms. Some temporary urinary symptoms (frequency, urgency, mild burning) are common for a few weeks after the procedure. Retrograde ejaculation (semen passes into the bladder rather than out of the penis) occurs in the majority of men after TURP. This does not affect sexual pleasure or the ability to achieve orgasm, but it does affect fertility.
Alternatives to TURP
For men wishing to preserve ejaculatory function, Mr Shahzad may recommend Aquablation, Rezum therapy, UroLift or Green Light laser therapy, depending on individual anatomy and symptoms.
