Prostate Cancer Diagnostics in Birmingham
Accurate diagnosis is essential for optimal prostate cancer management. Mr Syed Ali Shahzad, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, provides comprehensive prostate cancer diagnostics at private hospitals across Birmingham, using the latest imaging technology and biopsy techniques to ensure precise staging and grading.
Diagnostic Pathway
Mr Shahzad follows a structured, NICE-guideline-compliant diagnostic pathway:
- PSA blood test: The first-line investigation for suspected prostate cancer. An elevated or rising PSA prompts further assessment.
- Multi-parametric MRI (mpMRI): High-resolution MRI of the prostate to identify suspicious lesions and guide biopsy. This “MRI-first” approach, recommended by NICE, reduces unnecessary biopsies and increases cancer detection rates.
- Targeted biopsy: When the MRI shows a suspicious lesion (PIRADS score 3-5), a targeted biopsy is performed under ultrasound guidance, either transperineally (through the skin) or transrectally, to sample the identified area precisely.
Benefits of an MRI-First Approach
The MRI-first pathway detects more clinically significant prostate cancers and fewer insignificant ones compared with systematic biopsy alone. This leads to more appropriate treatment decisions and avoids over-treatment of low-risk disease.
After Diagnosis
Following a confirmed diagnosis, Mr Shahzad discusses the findings, Gleason/ISUP grade and staging with the patient clearly and without jargon, before presenting the treatment options appropriate for their specific cancer and personal circumstances.
