Bladder Neck Obstruction Treatment in Birmingham
Bladder neck obstruction (BNO) occurs when the bladder neck, the muscular ring at the base of the bladder where it joins the urethra, fails to open properly during urination. This causes outflow obstruction and urinary symptoms. Causes
BNO may be primary (bladder neck dysfunction without an obvious structural cause) or secondary to scarring following previous prostate surgery, BPH, radiotherapy or inflammation. In young men, primary bladder neck dysfunction is an underrecognised cause of voiding symptoms.

- Slow or hesitant urinary stream
- Straining to urinate
- A sensation of incomplete bladder emptying

Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis involves urodynamic studies, cystoscopy and urine flow rate measurement. Primary BNO in men is effectively treated with alpha-blockers or surgical bladder neck incision. Secondary BNO (contracture) after prostate surgery may require endoscopic incision or dilatation. Mr Shahzad employs minimally invasive techniques throughout.
