Urine Cytology Test in Birmingham

Urine cytology is a laboratory examination of cells shed into urine. It may support the investigation or monitoring of urothelial cancer, particularly when higher-grade disease is a concern, but it does not replace cystoscopy or appropriate imaging.

When cytology may be considered

  • Investigation of blood in the urine in selected patients
  • Follow-up of some patients previously treated for bladder cancer
  • An abnormal-looking area or ongoing concern despite other tests
  • Assessment directed by a urologist or multidisciplinary team

How the sample is assessed

  • A urine sample is collected according to the laboratory instructions
  • Cells in the sample are examined by specialist laboratory staff
  • The report may describe negative, atypical, suspicious or malignant findings
  • Results are interpreted alongside cystoscopy, imaging and clinical history

Limits of urine cytology

  • It is generally more useful for detecting high-grade disease than low-grade tumours
  • Inflammation, infection or recent instrumentation can affect appearances
  • A negative result does not rule out bladder cancer
  • An abnormal result may require further investigation rather than providing a diagnosis alone

How this fits your care: Visible blood in urine should be assessed promptly. Urine cytology is only one possible part of that assessment.
